Planning to continue studying in Australia? Understanding the new Australian Student Visa Extension Rules 2026 is important before accepting a new course or booking travel. From 2 October 2026, most current Student visa holders must apply for their next Student visa (subclass 500) from overseas unless an exemption applies. Before proceeding, check whether you are eligible to apply onshore or offshore under the updated Australian Student visa rules. [1]
Understanding Three Key Terms: Student Visa Extension, Onshore and Offshore
- Visa extension: usually means applying for a new Student visa (subclass 500). Your existing visa is not automatically extended.
- Onshore: you are physically in Australia when the application is submitted.
- Offshore: you are physically outside Australia when it is submitted. This includes current students who leave Australia to apply again.
Your location matters, even if an agent submits the application for you.
Who may still apply inside Australia
If you are the main Student visa holder, the main study-related exemptions include: [2, 3]
- Finishing your current studies: you need no more than 12 extra months after the original course end date, with the same provider. This concerns your main course, including in a course package. It is not 12 months after your previous study date on which basis student visa was granted.
- Moving to a higher qualification: you have completed your main course and are enrolled in one further course at a higher Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level. After higher education, the next course must also be higher education delivered by a higher education provider.
Other exemptions cover PhD study, primary or secondary school, DFAT or Defence sponsorship, and qualifying cases where a provider fails to deliver a course. Certain transitions from school or courses without an AQF level also qualify. Each category has conditions. [2, 3]
For provider default, the legislation includes a 12-month application deadline and a restriction on repeat applications for the same default. [3]
A quick example
Need six more months to finish your main course at the same college? You may qualify to apply onshore. Finished a course and want another at the same level? The higher-level progression exemption does not apply; check whether another exemption is available. [2, 3]
Meeting an exemption allows an onshore application only if all other application rules are met. It does not guarantee visa approval.
What If You Do Not Qualify for an Onshore Student Visa Exemption?
You will generally need to leave Australia before applying for your next Student visa. If the rules require you to apply from overseas, you must also be outside Australia when the new visa is granted. [2, 4]
Leaving Australia only addresses where you can apply. You must still meet the visa requirements; irrespective of you are applying onshore or offshore application.
A Student visa dependant applying to become the main student must apply and be granted the visa outside Australia. Home Affairs states that there are no exemptions to this rule. [2]
Does everyone have to leave immediately
No. These changes do not cancel your current Student visa. Continue following its conditions and check its expiry date. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue under the earlier rules. [1, 4]
If you cannot apply validly onshore and have no other lawful visa option, arrange departure before your visa expires. Do not wait for expiry to start planning.
Five steps to plan your next application
- Check your visa. Confirm the expiry date, conditions and whether you hold it as the main student or a dependant.
- Check your course. Compare the original and revised end dates, provider, completion evidence and proposed qualification level.
- Confirm where you can apply. Have your exemption and other application requirements assessed before paying new course fees or booking travel.
- Prepare the evidence. Arrange your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), health insurance, study records and required financial, English, health and Genuine Student evidence. Check the official checklist for your circumstances. [5]
- Plan for the waiting period. If applying overseas, discuss study interruption or deferral with your provider and budget for time abroad. Do not assume a quick decision or a guaranteed return date.
Two important checks before you travel
Bridging visas: an application lodged outside Australia does not give you a linked bridging visa. If you already hold a bridging visa, check its travel conditions before leaving; a Bridging visa A does not provide return travel rights. [5, 6]
Partners and children: new restrictions also apply to including family members, with limited exemptions and transitional arrangements. Check each family member’s position before making a new application or arranging departure. [7]
