UK Visa Process & Required Documents
The UK visa process for international students typically involves several steps, and the specific requirements may vary depending on factors such as the student’s nationality, the type of course, and the duration of study.
1. Choose a Course and Institution:
- Before applying for a UK student visa, students must first choose a course and institution that they wish to study at. The institution must be a licensed Student sponsor.
2. Apply for Admission:
- Once the course and institution have been chosen, students must apply for admission and receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the institution. The CAS is a unique reference number issued by the institution and is required for the visa application.
3. Prepare Required Documents:
- Before starting the visa application process, students should gather the required documents. Common documents required for a UK student visa application include:
- Valid passport
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the institution
- Proof of English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS or TOEFL score)
- Academic qualifications (transcripts, diplomas, certificates)
- Financial documents demonstrating sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
- Tuberculosis (TB) test results (if applicable)
- Any additional documents specified by the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)
4. Complete the Online Visa Application:
- International students must apply for a Student visa online through the official Gov.UK website.
5. Pay the Visa Application Fee:
- The visa application fee must be paid online as part of the application process. The current Student visa application fee is £490 if applying from outside the UK.
6. Biometric Enrollment:
- After submitting the online visa application, students must schedule an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph). Biometric enrollment is a mandatory part of the visa application process.
7. Attend a Visa Interview (if required):
- In some cases, students may be required to attend a visa interview at the UK embassy, consulate, or visa application center in their home country. The interview may be conducted in-person or via video conference.
8. Wait for Visa Processing:
- Once the visa application has been submitted, students must wait for the application to be processed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Processing times vary depending on the applicant's nationality and other factors.
9. Receive Visa Decision:
- After the visa application has been processed, students will receive a decision on their visa application. If approved, students will receive an eVisa (digital immigration status), which can be accessed via a UKVI account. If a vignette sticker is issued, it will allow travel to the UK until the eVisa is activated.
10. Digital Immigration Status (eVisa):
- From 2025 onwards, physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are being phased out. Students will use an eVisa to prove their immigration status. This can be viewed and shared online through a UKVI account after arrival in the UK.
