Skilled Independent Visa (SUBCLASS 189)

The Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) is a point-based visa designed to select a certain set of overseas skilled people required in different states of Australia.

It allows skilled workers to move and live in Australia without the need of having a sponsorship of a family member or nomination by the state or territory government.

To apply for this visa you must:

  • Age that is 45 years. It is the visa age limit
  • Nominate an occupation from Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Be Proficient in At least Competent English
  • Have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority
  • Achieve the score specified in your visa application
  • Meet the health and character requirements

The visa process includes steps mentioned below :-

This involves completing a skills assessment with the relevant government body in the occupation listed in MLTSSL List . Your skills assessment enables the Department of Home Affairs to judge if you have the required level of skill and work experience in your chosen occupation to work in Australia.

Once you have received a positive skills assessment, you will need to submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. You can submit it from within or outside Australia

Once you have been issued with an Invitation to Apply, you can submit your completed visa application for processing by the Australian Government. A successful applicant is given a 5 years multiple entry visa to live and work in Australia.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491)

The 491 visa, Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa will enable eligible skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in designated regional areas of Australia for 5 years. Visa holders will be eligible to apply for a Permanent Residence visa after three years. Applicants for this visa must be nominated by:

  • An Australian state or territory government agency or
  • Sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area and be invited to apply for the visa
  • Have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • You must satisfy eligibility criteria of points-based test for applying for this visa.
  • You must have an invitation to apply for this visa.

This will require you to meet the sponsorship requirements and have work experience in a position listed on one of the State Migration Plans.
