Citizenship by Descent

Australian Citizenship by Descent is available to children born outside Australia if at least one parent was an Australian citizen at the time of the child’s birth.

Once citizenship by descent is granted, the child becomes an Australian citizen and enjoys the same rights and privileges as other Australian citizens. This includes the right to live, study, and work in Australia, as well as the ability to apply for an Australian passport.

When applying, parents must provide:

  • Evidence of the parent’s Australian citizenship
  • The child’s identity documents
  • The child’s birth certificate and birth details

Citizenship by Descent is a permanent status and does not require the child to hold a visa to live in Australia once citizenship is granted.

Child Visa

The Child Visa allows a child to travel to or remain in Australia to live with their parent who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
This visa is designed for children who are:

  • Born overseas, or
  • Living separately from their parents
  • and wish to reunite with their family in Australia.

    Types of Child Visas

    There are different child visa options depending on the child’s location and circumstances, including:

  • Child visas for applications made outside Australia
  • Child visas for applications made inside Australia
  • Visas for adopted children
  • Visas for dependent children of temporary partner visa holders

  • The child must be dependent on the parent

  • The child must meet health requirements, and character requirements where applicable

The Child Visa provides children with the opportunity to live with their parents in Australia and access education and healthcare in line with Australian regulations.
